How to Tell the Difference and What to Do
At Seeds2Succeed Wellness & Therapy, we believe that awareness is the first step to healing. Many people silently struggle with low energy, disconnection, or feeling “off,” unsure if it’s just stress, burnout, or something deeper like depression.
Knowing the difference matters. It guides the support you need and helps you care for yourself in a way that truly heals.
🔍 Burnout or Depression?
Both can leave you feeling exhausted, unmotivated, and emotionally drained, but they’re not the same.
🧠 Burnout looks like:
- Feeling mentally and physically worn out
- Losing motivation for work or tasks
- Irritability or cynicism toward responsibilities
- Trouble sleeping or constant stress tension
🛠️ Burnout usually improves with rest, boundaries, and shifting workload or environment.
🌧️ Depression feels like:
- Persistent sadness or emptiness
- Loss of interest in everything, not just work
- Fatigue that doesn’t lift, even with rest
- Guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness
- Appetite, sleep, or focus changes
- Thoughts of self-harm or suicide (seek help immediately)
🛠️ Depression is a clinical condition. It often needs therapeutic support and may include counseling and/or medication.
🧭 Quick Self-Check
Ask yourself:
- Is this only happening at work or school? → Likely burnout
- Do I still enjoy personal time? → Likely burnout
- Does rest not help at all? → Possibly depression
- Do I feel disconnected from everything? → Possibly depression
💡 You can experience both. Burnout left untreated can evolve into depression.
