April is Stress Awareness Month
At Seeds2Succeed Wellness & Therapy, we know stress shows up in everyoneās lifeāwhether itās the pressure to perform, the overwhelm of parenting, the unpredictability of life events, or the quiet burn of decision fatigue.
During Stress Awareness Month, we want to highlight tools that go beyond just ācopingāātools that help you live a fuller, more values-aligned life even in the face of stress.
One such approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Itās not about avoiding or eliminating stress, but about learning to carry it with greater ease, while moving toward what matters most to you.
š§© Understanding Stress Through the ACT Lens
ACT teaches us that stress isnāt just a problem to fix, but a signal to noticeāand an invitation to respond with awareness and flexibility. Here are a few key ACT-based ideas for working with stress:
- Cognitive Defusion šÆļø: Instead of being fused with stressful thoughts (like āI canāt handle thisā or āIām failingā), ACT encourages you to step back and see them as just thoughts, not absolute truths.
- Acceptance š: Rather than battling unwanted feelings, ACT helps you make space for them with kindnessārecognizing that emotions come and go, like waves.
- Present Moment Awareness š§š½: Staying grounded in whatās happening now, instead of spiraling into past regrets or future worries.
- Values-Based Action š¶š¾āāļø: Stress can shrink your world. ACT reminds us to take small steps toward the life we wantāeven when stress is along for the ride.
š± Plant the Seed with This Weekās Practice: “Name It to Tame It + Take a Values Step”
Try this simple two-part ACT-based strategy when stress is rising:
1. Name It to Tame It š£ļø
Pause and label the stress you’re experiencing, without judgment. For example:
ā āIām feeling overwhelmed.ā
ā āMy thoughts are racing.ā
ā āI notice tightness in my chest.ā
2. Take a Values Step āØ
Ask yourself: What matters to me right now?
Then take a small step in that direction, even if stress is present.
ā Overwhelmed at work? Email one person youāve been avoiding.
ā Tense at home? Take 5 minutes to sit with your child and listen.
ā Mentally exhausted? Step outside and feel the sunlight to get a ābreath of fresh airā.
These micro-moments of action create momentum toward a life that feels more like you.
Growing Through Awareness
Stress is part of being human. But it doesnāt have to block you from being you. With ACT-inspired tools, you can hold space for difficult emotions while still showing up for your values. You donāt have to wait for stress to disappear before you start living more fullyāyou can move forward with it, one conscious, compassionate step at a time. Let this April be your invitation to stress less about controlling lifeāand focus more on creating it.
