Have you ever told yourself:
“I’ll do it when I feel more confident.”
When I know what I’m doing.
When I’m less nervous.
When I feel ready.
When I know it will work out.
So you wait.
And sometimes, waiting feels safer than trying.
But what if confidence isn’t something you need before you begin?
What if confidence is something you build because you begin?
🧠 Why
We often think confidence comes first:
Confidence → Action
But life doesn’t always work that way.
Sometimes it’s:
Action → Experience → Confidence
Fear and self-doubt don’t necessarily mean you’re making the wrong choice. They may simply mean you’re stepping into something unfamiliar.
The goal isn’t to get rid of the fear before you move.
It’s learning that you can move forward while the fear is there.
This is at the heart of the work described by Russ Harris in The Confidence Gap: rather than waiting for confidence to arrive, we can learn to make room for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings while taking action toward what matters to us.
💡 What to Do Instead
Try the Notice → Name → Connect → Act practice.
Notice:
What am I feeling right now?
Name:
What am I afraid might happen?
Connect:
Why does this matter to me?
Act:
What is one small step I can take anyway?
You don’t need to apply for the job.
Open the application.
You don’t need to have the difficult conversation.
Write down what you want to say.
You don’t need to completely change your routine.
Take the first five minutes.
Make the step smaller, not the goal.
📅 This Week’s Wellness Challenge
Think of one thing you’ve been avoiding because you don’t feel confident or ready.
Ask yourself:
“What would I do if I didn’t need to feel confident first?”
Then take one five-minute step toward it.
At the end of the week, don’t measure whether you felt confident.
Measure whether you showed up.
That is the practice.
🌱 Growing Through Awareness
Confidence isn’t always the feeling that arrives before we begin.
Sometimes it is what we discover because we began.
You can be nervous and still speak.
You can be uncertain and still try.
You can be afraid and still move forward.
You don’t have to silence the voice that says, “What if I fail?”
You can simply answer:
“Maybe. And I’m still going to take the next step.”
Growth doesn’t require certainty.
It requires willingness.
Plant the seeds to succeed. Growth begins when you stop waiting to feel ready and start taking small steps toward what matters.
